In addition, the origin of the image itself is scientifically inexplicable. It manifests on the shroud in the form of a photo negative, yet it's been known to exist since about 1360 at the latest, long before producing photo negative images was understood.Years ago, as a skeptic of the Shroud, I came to realize that while I might believe it was a fake, I could not know so from the facts. Now, as someone who believes it is the real burial shroud of Jesus of Nazareth, I similarly realize that a leap of faith over unanswered questions is essential. When the scientists announced the results, they rather triumphantly declared that its history goes back only to medieval times, from between 12 AD.And yet the shroud remains an object of devotion, particularly because the radiocarbon dating leaves so much unanswered about the enigmatic Christian icon.Recent robust statistical studies add weight to this theory.Philip Ball, the former physical science editor for Nature when the carbon dating results were published, recently wrote: “It’s fair to say that, despite the seemingly definitive tests in 1988, the status of the Shroud of Turin is murkier than ever.” If we wish to be scientific we must admit we do not know how old the cloth is.

I am deeply indebted to them for sharing their knowledge, wisdom and advice.

There is a density of encrustation coating Shroud sample p2574_9 which is not present on the other two samples.

The “frosty” 6 contaminant is also not present on the Mark Evans image of the Shroud.15 As ‘the "frosty" coating is almost certainly a plant gum in the Raes sample’ 6 it is likely to be a plant gum in the Oxford sample.

There is very little data about the samples tested by Oxford, Zurich and Arizona: no chemical analysis has been published and most of the photographic evidence is not sufficiently detailed.

However, further evidence of encrustation is visible in the Oxford photographs.14 Below is a comparison of the 3 samples tested at higher magnification (the Shroud, Thebes and Nubia).
